How to Get a Cat to Drink More Water: 7 Things That Worked for Penelope

Cats evolved getting water from prey, so they do not feel thirst the way dogs do. Add dry food and you get a chronically under-hydrated cat, which is a known factor in urinary crystals and kidney stress. Penelope was that cat. Here is what moved the needle, in order of impact.

1. Moving water

This did most of the work. Cats read still water as possibly stagnant and moving water as fresh. The day the fountain arrived, Penelope drank more than she had in the previous week. If you only do one thing, do this.

Catit Flower Fountain ยท About $30

Three flow settings, quiet, cheap filters. The single biggest hydration change in this house.

2. Water away from food

Instinct again: prey near water contaminates it. Move the water bowl or fountain to another room. Ours is in the hallway and gets more traffic than the kitchen ever did.

3. Multiple stations

Four cats, three water spots. Cats will not queue. A second cheap fountain or a wide ceramic bowl upstairs adds drinks you never see.

Ceramic Whisker-Friendly Cat Bowls, Raised ยท About $20

Wide and shallow so whiskers do not touch the sides. Cats avoid deep bowls for exactly that reason.

4. Wet food, even partially

Wet food is about 75 percent water. One wet meal a day adds more water than most cats will drink voluntarily. In this house it is a wet dinner on top of Life's Abundance dry.

5. Water in the wet food

Stir a tablespoon of warm water into wet food. Most cats do not notice. Churu tubes count too, they are mostly water.

Inaba Churu Lickable Cat Treats ยท About $15

Mostly water and chicken. A hydration bribe that every cat here sprints for.

6. Clean it more than you think

Biofilm builds in bowls and fountains within days. Cats can taste it. Rinse daily, wash weekly, swap fountain filters monthly.

Catit Fountain Replacement Filters ยท About $12

Multipack lasts most of a year. Set a monthly reminder.

7. Try the material

Some cats avoid plastic. Stainless or ceramic bowls are worth a try before you give up on a stubborn cat.

How to tell it is working

The Litter-Robot 5 Pro app shows per-cat visits, which is how I confirmed Penelope's urination count went up. Without a smart box, watch clump size and count in the litter. Bigger, more frequent clumps mean more water in.

Frequently asked questions

How much water should a cat drink per day?

Roughly 3.5 to 4.5 ounces per 5 lb of body weight, total from food and drinking. A cat on all dry food needs to drink most of that.

Is a fountain really better than a bowl?

For most cats, yes. It is the single change with the biggest effect in this house and in most owner reports I have seen.

My cat drinks from the faucet but not the bowl. Why?

Moving water, elevated, away from food. Give them all three in a fountain and the faucet begging usually stops.
