Cats evolved in dry climates getting most of their water from prey, so they have a weak thirst drive. Add dry food and you get a cat who is chronically a little dehydrated, which is a known contributor to urinary problems. Moving water flips the instinct. It reads as fresh, so they drink more. Penelope went from ignoring her bowl to drinking several times a day the week the fountain arrived.

What to look for in any fountain
- Quiet pump. A gurgling fountain is a fountain your cat avoids. Keep the water topped up so the pump never sucks air.
- Easy disassembly. Slime builds up. If it takes tools to clean, you will not clean it.
- Replaceable filters. Carbon plus a foam pre-filter is standard. Budget for swaps.
- Capacity. Four cats empty two liters in about two days. One cat can go a week.
The filter routine
Swap filters every 3 to 4 weeks, rinse the pump every week, and run a vinegar soak monthly. Buy the multipack, it is far cheaper per filter.

Stainless or ceramic instead?
If you have a cat with chin acne, plastic can make it worse and a stainless fountain is worth the extra money. None of mine have that issue, so the Catit stays. Search stainless cat fountain on Amazon and look for one with a removable pump housing.
Placement
Away from the food bowl and far from the litter box. Cats do not like drinking next to where they eat, another prey instinct. Ours sits in the hallway and gets more traffic than the kitchen.
