For most of 2022, Stripes ate breakfast and brought it back up ten minutes later. Not every day, but often enough that I had a routine for it. The vet found nothing wrong. What fixed it was a food change plus two feeding changes, and it has held for two years. Here is what worked, what did not, and the order to try things in.

Rule out the medical stuff first

Frequent vomiting can be hairballs, eating too fast, food intolerance, or something serious like IBD, pancreatitis or kidney disease. If your cat is losing weight, vomiting daily, or has diarrhea with it, that is a vet visit before a food change. The signs your cat might be sick post covers what to watch. Stripes got bloodwork and a clean bill, which is when the food experiments started.

What “sensitive stomach” food actually means

  • Limited ingredients. One or two protein sources, so you can spot what triggers the cat.
  • Highly digestible protein. Chicken, turkey or fish that is named, not “meat by-products.”
  • No corn, wheat, soy. Common fillers, common irritants.
  • Added fiber or prebiotics. Pumpkin, beet pulp, or a prebiotic blend helps regulate.
  • Moderate fat. Very rich foods trigger vomiting in some cats.

What Stripes eats now

Life's Abundance dry as the base. Named protein first, no corn or wheat or soy, a prebiotic and probiotic blend, and it ships in small fresh batches instead of sitting in a warehouse going rancid. The freshness turned out to matter. Old kibble oil is a common trigger nobody talks about.

Life's Abundance Cat Food ยท Auto-ship

Named protein first, prebiotics and probiotics, no fillers, shipped fresh. The switch that ended the after-breakfast vomiting.

The two feeding changes

Smaller, more frequent meals. Four small meals instead of two big ones. An automatic feeder makes this painless. Cats that eat a large meal on an empty stomach are the ones that bring it back up.

PETLIBRO Automatic Cat Feeder ยท About $90

Four small scheduled meals a day with no effort. Small meals were half the fix.

Slow it down. Stripes inhaled food. A raised whisker-friendly bowl plus a puzzle feeder for one meal a day cut his eating speed in half.

Ceramic Raised Whisker-Friendly Cat Bowls ยท About $20

Shallow and raised. Stopped the scoop-and-gulp habit and the food on the floor.

If you want a limited-ingredient wet food

For the wet dinner, a single-protein pate. Turkey worked best here. Rotate slowly, one protein at a time, and give each two weeks before judging.

Limited Ingredient Turkey Pate Cat Food ยท About $30 for 24

Single protein, pate texture, no carrageenan. The wet food that did not restart the vomiting.

How to switch without making it worse

  1. Days 1 to 3: 75 percent old food, 25 percent new.
  2. Days 4 to 6: half and half.
  3. Days 7 to 9: 25 percent old, 75 percent new.
  4. Day 10: all new. If vomiting spikes at any step, hold there for three more days.

What did not work

  • Grain-free for its own sake. Grain was not the issue, fat and speed were.
  • Hairball formula. Helped hairballs, did nothing for the after-meal vomiting.
  • Prescription GI food. Worked, but at three times the price and he hated it. Kept as a fallback.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my cat throw up right after eating?

Most often eating too fast or too much at once, especially dry food that expands in the stomach. Smaller frequent meals and a slow feeder fix the majority of cases. If it persists, see a vet.

Is wet or dry food better for a sensitive stomach?

Wet is usually gentler because of the moisture and lower carbs, but a high quality dry fed in small portions works fine for many cats. A mix is what works here.

How long does it take to see results from a new cat food?

Give it two weeks after the full switch. Faster changes are usually the portion size, not the food.

The full food comparison is in best cat food, and the wet vs dry reasoning is in wet vs dry cat food.
