Stripes is the comfort tester on this site, and comfort for him means heat. Before the heated bed he slept on the router, the laptop, and the one sunny square of carpet, in that order. The heated bed ended all of it. Here is what to look for and what he actually uses.

Safety first

  • Low wattage. 4 to 6 watts is plenty. It should warm to body temperature under the cat, not feel hot to your hand.
  • Chew-resistant cord. Steel-wrapped cords are standard on the good ones.
  • Thermostatic. Should only heat when weight is on it, or hold a fixed safe temperature.
  • Removable washable cover. Non-negotiable with cats.

Best overall: thermostatic plush bed

Low-watt pad inside a plush bolstered bed. Warms when he lies on it, stays mild when he does not. Cover zips off and machine washes. This is the one on the couch corner.

Best for windows: heated window perch

Bird watching plus heat. Penelope shares this one with Stripes on a rotation neither of them agreed to.

No-outlet option: self-warming bed

Self-warming beds use a reflective layer to bounce body heat back. Not as warm as a plug-in, but perfect for a spot with no outlet or a cat who chews cords.

Self Warming Cat Bed, Reflective Core ยท About $25

No cord, no power. Noticeably warmer than a normal bed. Good for the cat who chews everything.

Placement

Put it where the cat already sleeps, not where you want them to sleep. Move it later a foot a day. Off the floor is better, older cats especially like a raised warm spot. Keep it away from radiators and direct heaters so the pad does not stack heat.

Frequently asked questions

Are heated cat beds safe to leave on all the time?

Low-watt thermostatic beds are designed for it. They warm to about body temperature only under weight. Check the cord monthly.

Do cats actually like heated beds?

Cats seek surfaces around 100ยฐF, which is why they sleep on electronics. A heated bed gives them that safely.

Heated bed or heating pad for a senior cat?

A bed made for cats. Human heating pads run too hot and are not built to be slept on for hours.
