The number one question I get about the Litter-Robot is “will my cat actually use it?” Mine did, all four, but not on the same schedule. Here is the exact 30-day plan I used, so you can skip the guessing.
Before it arrives
- Pick the spot now. Quiet, low traffic, near an outlet, next to where the old box lives. Do not move it later.
- Order a bag of the same litter your cats already use. Changing the box and the litter at the same time is asking for a protest.
- Keep the old box. You will run both for a while.
Days 1 to 3: unplugged
Assemble it, fill it to the line, and leave it powered off next to the old box. Let it be furniture. Luna was inside it within the hour. Minnie Mouse walked past it for two days like it owed her money.
Days 4 to 7: power on, cycle manually
Plug it in but set the cycle delay to the longest setting in the app. Watch a couple of cycles happen from a distance while the cats are in the room. Stripes flinched once, then decided it was fine. Toss a Churu treat near it after each cycle so the sound means good things.
Inaba Churu Lickable Treats ยท About $15
The bribe that made the cycle noise a positive signal. Works on all four cats.
Days 8 to 14: stop cleaning the old box
This is the trick. Leave the old box in place but stop scooping it. Cats want a clean box, and the Litter-Robot is always clean. Penelope switched on day 9. Minnie Mouse, the holdout, switched on day 13 and never looked back.
Days 15 to 21: remove the old box
Once every cat has used the Litter-Robot at least a few times, take the old box away. Put the litter mat down at the entrance now, it catches most of the tracking.
Pieviev Double Layer Litter Mat ยท About $20
Cut litter tracking through the house by most of what it was. Shake it over the trash weekly.
Days 22 to 30: dial in the settings
- Cycle delay: 7 minutes worked best here. Long enough for clumps to firm up, short enough that a second cat is not walking into a mess.
- Night light: on. Older cats appreciate it.
- Waste drawer: empty it when the app says, not after. With four cats that is about every 5 days. Drop a deodorizer pod in each new bag.
Arm & Hammer Litter Box Deodorizer Pods ยท Under $10
One pod per drawer bag. The cheapest fix for drawer smell between empties.
Mistakes I made so you don't have to
- Moving it after week one because of the cord. Everyone regressed for three days.
- Using a lightweight litter. Clumps broke apart in the sift. Use a hard-clumping clay.
- Ignoring the “drawer full” alert. It stops cycling. The cats notice before you do.
