The most common Litter-Robot complaint I hear is “it leaves clumps behind” or “the drawer smells.” Nine times out of ten the cause is the litter, not the robot. The sifting screen needs hard clumps that hold together during the rotation. Soft clumps break, fall through, and end up back in the globe. Here is what I have learned running a Litter-Robot with four cats.
What the Litter-Robot needs from a litter
- Clay-based clumping. Whisker says it, and it is true. Bentonite clay makes the hardest clumps.
- Standard weight, not lightweight. Lightweight litter clumps break apart and dust up the sensors.
- Low dust. Dust coats the DFI sensors and causes false “drawer full” alerts.
- Unscented. Scented litter plus enclosed drawer equals a worse smell, not a better one.
- Fill to the line. Overfilling is the number two cause of cycle problems after soft litter.
My daily litter
Dr. Elsey's Ultra has been in the globe for three years. Clumps are rock hard, dust is minimal, and a 40 lb bag lasts about a month with four cats. It is also one of the cheapest per pound because of the bag size.
Dr. Elsey's Ultra Premium Clumping Cat Litter, 40 lb ยท About $25
Hard clumps that survive the sift, almost no dust, unscented. The safest litter for any Litter-Robot model.
Runner up: Boxiecat
Boxiecat clumps flat and hard on top, which the Litter-Robot loves. It costs more and comes in smaller bags, so it makes more sense for one or two cats.
Boxiecat Premium Clumping Litter ยท About $30 for 28 lb
Extremely flat, hard clumps and very low dust. Pricier per pound than Dr. Elsey's.
If you want a health-monitoring litter
PrettyLitter changes color with urine pH. It is silica, so it does not clump, which means the Litter-Robot cannot sift it properly. Use it in a backup box if you want the health signal, not in the robot.
PrettyLitter Health Monitoring Cat Litter ยท Subscription
Useful health indicator, but non-clumping silica does not work in the Litter-Robot globe. Backup box only.
What to avoid
- Lightweight anything. It floats, it dusts, it jams.
- Pine, paper, wheat, corn pellets. Non-clumping or soft clumping. The sift fails.
- Crystal or silica. No clumps, so nothing to sift.
- Heavily scented clay. Fine mechanically, but the drawer becomes a perfume factory.
Drawer odor fix
Even with good litter, the waste drawer holds several days of output. A deodorizer pod in each drawer bag and emptying when the app says, not later, keeps it under control. Full system in the odor control post.
Arm & Hammer Litter Box Deodorizer Pods ยท Under $10
One pod per drawer bag. Cheapest odor fix there is.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use lightweight litter in the Litter-Robot?
No. Whisker says clay clumping only, and lightweight clumps crumble in the sift and the dust triggers sensor errors.
How much litter goes in a Litter-Robot 4 or 5?
Fill to the raised fill line inside the globe, about 8 to 10 lb. Overfilling causes clumps to stick above the screen.
How often do I fully change the litter?
I do a full dump and globe wash monthly with four cats, topping up weekly in between.
