Four cats produce a lot of litter box output. The house does not smell like it, and that is not luck, it is a system. Every layer below does one job, and together they mean I stopped apologizing to guests years ago.
Layer 1: the box cleans itself
Odor comes from waste sitting in the box. A self-cleaning box removes it minutes after it lands. This is the single biggest change you can make, and the Litter-Robot is the one I trust with four cats. The 5 series adds WasteID, which targets odor control based on what was deposited.

Hard-clumping, unscented clay. Scented litter covers smell for a day and then you have two smells. Dr. Elsey's clumps hard enough that the Litter-Robot sifts cleanly and nothing crumbles into the drawer.

Layer 3: seal the waste
The Litter-Robot drawer is enclosed, but it is not airtight. A deodorizer pod in each drawer bag handles the in-between days. If you use a regular box, a sealed pail is not optional.

Layer 4: accidents
Cat urine outside the box is the one smell nothing masks. Enzyme cleaner breaks it down instead of covering it. Luna had a phase. This bottle ended it.

Layer 5: the air
Litter dust and dander float. A HEPA purifier in the litter room runs 24 hours a day here and the filter tells the story every three months.

The schedule
- Daily: nothing. The box cycles itself.
- Every 5 days: empty the drawer, new bag, new pod.
- Weekly: shake out the litter mat, wipe the globe entrance.
- Monthly: full globe wash, top up litter to the line, check purifier filter.
