An automatic cat feeder sounds like a luxury until you have more than one cat. Then it becomes the thing that stops the 5am screaming, keeps the fast eater from stealing the slow eater's breakfast, and lets you leave for a weekend without a house sitter. I have run automatic feeders in this house for four cats since 2022. Most of them failed. Here is what held up.
What matters in a multi-cat feeder
- Portion accuracy. Cheap feeders dump kibble by “time open,” not by weight, so portions drift. Look for a feeder rated in grams or tablespoons with a screw-style dispenser.
- Jam resistance. Life's Abundance kibble is a mid-size pellet and it jammed two cheap feeders in a week. Stainless or coated auger wheels do better.
- Lockable lid. Luna opened a snap-lid feeder on night one. Twist-lock or screw-lock only.
- Two-bowl splitter or two feeders. One bowl and four cats means one cat eats. Either buy a feeder with a splitter or run two units on the same schedule.
- Battery backup. Power blips reset cheap feeders. Backup batteries keep the schedule.
The feeder I run daily
PETLIBRO's WiFi feeder with the dual-bowl splitter has been in the kitchen for over a year. Portions are consistent to within a few kibble, the app lets me feed remotely, and the lid takes a twist that Luna has not cracked. Stripes and Minnie share one, Penelope and Luna share the other.
PETLIBRO Automatic Cat Feeder with Two-Way Splitter ยท About $90
Consistent portions, twist-lock lid, app scheduling, battery backup. Two cats per unit is the sweet spot.
Budget pick
If you do not need WiFi, a programmable non-app feeder does the same job for half the price. Set four meal times on the buttons and it just runs. The one below has the same screw dispenser style that avoids jams.
Programmable Automatic Cat Feeder (No WiFi) ยท About $45
Button scheduling, no app needed, holds a week of food for two cats. Slightly noisier motor.
For the cat who steals food
If one cat needs a different diet, a microchip feeder that only opens for that cat's chip is the real fix. It is expensive, but it is the only way I know to feed Stripes his sensitive-stomach portion without Luna eating it first.
SureFeed Microchip Pet Feeder ยท About $150
Opens only for the registered cat. Solves diet separation in multi-cat homes. Bowl is small, refill daily.
Setup tips that saved me headaches
- Run the feeder next to the old bowl for three days with the lid open so the cats learn the sound.
- Feed slightly less per meal than you think and add a fourth meal. Small frequent meals cut vomiting in this house to almost zero.
- Wash the hopper monthly. Kibble oil builds up and goes rancid.
- Pair it with a fountain. Dry food plus low water intake is the urinary problem combo.
Frequently asked questions
Can one automatic feeder work for four cats?
Not well. Use a two-bowl splitter or two feeders. One bowl means the dominant cat eats first and the timid cat gets leftovers.
Do automatic feeders work with wet food?
Some do with ice packs, but they are messy and the food dries out. For wet food, feed by hand or use a refrigerated feeder.
How do I stop my cat from breaking into the feeder?
Twist-lock lids and a hopper you can weight down. If a cat is that determined, move the feeder to a spot without a launch point above it.
What goes in the feeder matters as much as the feeder. See the cat food roundup and the Life's Abundance review.
