Luna is a tortoiseshell with a full battery and no off switch. When she is bored she opens cabinets, unrolls toilet paper, and starts fights at 3am. Every toy below has been tested against that, and the ranking is by how many weeks it stayed interesting.
1. Self-rolling ball (still going after a year)
A rechargeable ball that rolls on its own, changes direction when it hits something, and pauses to bait the cat. Luna chases it until the battery dies. It is the only solo-play toy that lasted more than a month.

2. Puzzle feeder

3. Tunnel
Four cats, one tunnel, constant ambushes. Cheap, folds flat, and the crinkle sound alone gets Luna moving.

4. Feather wand (with you)
Nothing beats a wand for real exercise, but it needs a human. Ten minutes at night is the single best insurance against 3am chaos.

5. Kicker toy
A long catnip kicker gives a wound-up cat something to bunny-kick that is not your arm. Luna has one under the couch she drags out at midnight.

Rotation is the secret
Cats get bored of any toy in a week. Keep half the toys in a drawer and swap them every Sunday. The old ones come back as new. This one habit doubled the useful life of everything above.

How many toys does an indoor cat need?
Fewer than you think, rotated more than you think. Five or six good toys swapped weekly beats twenty on the floor.
Are laser pointers bad for cats?
Not bad, but they frustrate cats when there is nothing to catch. Always end laser play by landing the dot on a real toy the cat can grab.
How much playtime does an indoor cat need?
Two sessions of 10 to 15 minutes a day of real chase play, plus solo toys and vertical space in between.
