Cats are trainable. The catch is that most treats are not valuable enough to hold their attention. After years of experiments, four cats in this house will now come to a whistle, sit for nail trims, and walk into the carrier on their own. Here is the treat ladder that made it work, from everyday to emergency-grade.
Tier 1: the everyday recall treat
Temptations are not health food, but the sound of the bag is the most reliable signal in the house. Shake it and four cats appear from four rooms. I use it purely for recall: come when called, get one, done.
Temptations Crunchy Cat Treats ยท Under $10
Cheap, loud bag, instant recall. One or two per cat per day and no more.
Tier 2: the high-value bribe
Churu lickable tubes are the currency for anything unpleasant. Nail trims happen with a Churu in my left hand and clippers in my right. Vet visits, medication, carrier training, all Churu. It is mostly water and chicken, so it doubles as hydration.
Inaba Churu Lickable Treats Variety Pack ยท About $15
The one treat every cat here will do anything for. Pair it with anything they hate and the hate goes away.
Tier 3: the work-for-it treat
Puzzle feeders turn kibble into a game. Luna will spend twenty minutes on hers, which is twenty minutes she is not opening cabinets. Use her normal dry food inside so it does not add calories.
Cat Puzzle Feeder ยท About $15
Enrichment plus slower eating. Luna is obsessed and the 3am zoomies are shorter.
How I trained recall in a week
- Pick a sound. I use a two-note whistle. Same every time.
- Whistle, then immediately give a treat, ten times a day for three days. No asking for anything yet.
- Day four: whistle from another room. Reward every cat who shows up.
- Day seven: whistle from the porch door. Reward. Now you can call them in from outside.
Nail trims without the fight
Squeeze a little Churu on a plate. While the cat is licking, clip one paw. Stop. Next day, other paw. Within two weeks Stripes was purring through the whole thing. Clippers matter too, small and sharp beats the big guillotine style.
Cat Nail Clippers ยท Under $10
Small, quiet, sharp. Pair with a Churu and it is a two-minute job.
Treat rules
- Treats are under 10 percent of daily calories. A Churu tube is about 6 calories, a Temptations piece is about 2.
- Never free-feed treats. They only work as currency if they are earned.
- Read the ingredients. Meat first, short list.
The everyday food that the treats sit on top of is covered in the Life's Abundance review.
