Scratching is stretching, claw maintenance, and scent marking all at once. A couch is tall, heavy, textured, and sits in the room where the humans are. That is the perfect scratching post from a cat's point of view. To win, your post has to beat the couch on all four counts.

34 inches is the magic number. Stripes can stretch full length on it, the base is heavy enough that Luna slamming into it does not tip it, and sisal rope holds up for years. It sits next to the couch corner that used to get shredded. Zero couch damage since.

Best horizontal: cardboard lounge
Some cats prefer scratching flat. Minnie Mouse is one. The L-shaped cardboard lounge gives her both angles and doubles as a bed. Cheap, replaceable, and cats love the texture.

The placement trick
- Put the post directly beside the spot being scratched. Not across the room.
- Rub catnip on it or play with a wand toy around it the first day.
- Cover the couch corner with a double-sided sticky sheet for two weeks.
- Once the post is the habit, move it a foot a day to where you actually want it.

Should I use a spray deterrent on the couch?
It helps short term, but without a better post nearby the cat just picks another spot. Redirect first, deter second.
How tall should a scratching post be?
At least 30 inches for an adult cat. Shorter posts do not allow a full stretch, which is half the reason cats scratch.
Sisal rope or sisal fabric?
Rope lasts longer and most cats prefer it. Fabric shreds faster but is quieter.
