Tracking is what happens when litter sticks to paws and gets carried out of the box. With four cats that used to mean litter in every room. The fix is four layers, and none of them is training the cat.
Step 1: pick a litter that does not stick
Lightweight litter is the worst for tracking, it clings to fur. Fine dusty litter is second worst. A standard-weight clay with medium granules like Dr. Elsey's falls off paws inside the box.

Step 2: make the exit a step down
A box with a high entry forces a jump, and a jumping cat scatters litter. The Litter-Robot has a step and a fence for this reason. On a regular box, a high-sided box with a low front opening works.

Not a rug. A double-layer mat with holes on top and a solid bottom. Litter falls through the top layer, the cat walks off clean, and you shake the mat into the trash. Size it so the cat has to take two full steps on it.

Two steps of mat is the trick. Catches most of what leaves the box. Shake out weekly.
Step 4: contain the room
If the box is in a room with a door, a second mat or a low-pile runner at the doorway catches the stragglers. A handheld vacuum next to the box means you actually clean it.

Bonus: trim the fur between the toes
Long-haired cats carry litter in toe fur. A quick trim between the pads with rounded scissors every few weeks cuts tracking noticeably. Stripes tolerates it for a Churu.
What did not work
- Enclosed hooded boxes. Cats hate them, and the litter still leaves on paws.
- Pellet litter. Less tracking, but it does not clump and the cats refused it.
- Carpet squares. They just become a second litter box.
Frequently asked questions
What litter tracks the least?
Standard-weight clay with medium granules, or large pellets if your cat will accept them. Lightweight and fine-grain litters track the most.
Do litter mats really work?
Double-layer trapping mats do. Flat rubber mats mostly do not. The mat has to be big enough for two full steps.
Does the Litter-Robot reduce tracking?
Yes, mainly because of the step and fence at the entrance. Pair it with a mat and tracking drops to near zero.
