Every cat food argument on the internet ends in wet versus dry. After feeding four cats for years and switching foods more than once, the answer that works here is both, on purpose, in a ratio that solves specific problems. Here is the reasoning and the exact setup.
What wet food does better

- Protein density. Less filler by weight, closer to what a cat is built to eat.
- Weight control. Cats feel full on fewer calories.
What dry food does better
- Convenience and cost. Automatic feeders, no fridge, cheaper per calorie.
- Grazing. Stays fresh in a bowl for hours. Wet food does not.
- Puzzle feeders. Enrichment only works with kibble.
What this house feeds
Breakfast is dry via the automatic feeder, dinner is wet by hand. Roughly 60 percent of calories from dry, 40 from wet. Two things happened when we moved from all-dry to this split: Stripes stopped vomiting after meals, and Penelope's litter clumps doubled in size, which is the hydration showing up.

The wet food

Bowls matter
Wide, shallow, raised. Deep bowls press whiskers and cats will scoop food onto the floor to avoid it. Stripes was the worst offender until the bowls changed.

On a budget
If you can only afford one upgrade, add one wet meal a day with whatever pate you can find and keep your current kibble. The water is the win. Then improve the kibble when you can.

For hydration and protein, yes. For cost, convenience and dental grazing, dry wins. Most vets are fine with a mix and that is what works here.
How much wet food should a cat eat per day?
A 10 lb cat needs roughly 200 to 250 calories a day. One 5.5 oz can of pate is about 180 to 200, so one can plus a small dry meal is a typical split.
Can I leave wet food out all day?
No. Toss it after an hour or two. Feed wet at set times and leave dry for grazing if you must leave food out.
